Niagara Jet Boat: US Side or Canada Side, Which Dock Should You Pick?

Both docks run the same operator and route; what changes is the drive, the parking, and whether you need a passport.

The Lewiston dock sits at 115 S Water St, Lewiston, NY 14092, on the lower level of the waterfront next to a small brewery building, which is a useful landmark if a GPS pin drops you a block off. From Niagara Falls, New York it's a straightforward 15 to 20 minute drive north via the Niagara Scenic Parkway, and free parking is available on-site, though it isn't guaranteed on the busiest peak-season days. Lewiston itself is a quiet historic village worth a short walk before or after your ride, with cafes and shops within a few minutes of the dock, so a wet-boat afternoon here can end with dry clothes and a coffee rather than a long drive back in soaked shoes.

The Queenston dock sits at 55 River Frontage Road, Queenston, Ontario L0S 1L0, Queenston being the riverside village within Niagara-on-the-Lake, a quieter and greener stretch of the border than the casino strip further north. From the Clifton Hill area of Niagara Falls, Ontario it's the same 15 to 20 minute drive, and parking is free on-site here too, again not guaranteed on peak days. A WeGo shuttle picks up from the Floral Clock on the Canadian side and runs to the dock, though that shuttle doesn't operate through the entire season, so check current schedules before counting on it rather than a car or taxi.

If you're already staying in Ontario, this dock needs no passport and no border crossing at all. The dock itself is wheelchair accessible; the boats are not, so travelers with mobility needs should factor that in regardless of which side they book from.

One thing the Canadian side does not have

The jet boats run from both banks, but the falls boats do not. Maid of the Mist boards only in New York; the Ontario equivalent is Niagara City Cruises, a different company at a different dock. Two bridges connect the two docks: the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge, about 5 minutes from either dock, and the Rainbow Bridge downtown at the falls. Both charge a toll of $6 USD ($8.50 CAD) per passenger car, charged only when heading into Canada, rates in effect since May 2025; crossing back into the US is toll-free. Everyone crossing needs a passport or a WHTI-compliant document such as a NEXUS card or an enhanced driver's license.

Without one, you can be denied entry outright, so this isn't a detail to leave for the bridge booth.

Which bridge to actually use

The Lewiston-Queenston Bridge is the direct route between the two docks and typically the quieter of the two crossings, since it sits well upriver of the falls and away from the heaviest sightseeing traffic. The Rainbow Bridge sits downtown, right at the falls, and tends to carry heavier traffic and longer wait times because every visitor doing falls-side sightseeing on foot funnels through it too. If your only reason to cross is the jet boat itself, the Lewiston-Queenston crossing is the faster of the two.

Pedestrians and the walk-across option

The Lewiston-Queenston Bridge does not allow pedestrian crossings, cars only. The Rainbow Bridge downtown does have a pedestrian walkway, so a walk-across day trip between the two falls-side downtowns is possible there, though it's a longer drive from either jet boat dock than the Lewiston-Queenston crossing.

Should you actually cross just for the ride?

Being direct about it: no, not on its own. The ride is identical from both docks, same operator, same boats, same route through Devil's Hole. Crossing the border adds a toll, a passport check, and 5 to 15 extra minutes for what is otherwise the same 45-minute experience.

The only reason to cross is if the rest of your day already lives on the other side, a Canadian-side falls tour, a Clifton Hill dinner, or an American-side Cave of the Winds visit, in which case riding from that side simply saves you a second crossing later.

The pattern in that table is the whole argument of this guide: for every common starting point there's a dock on your own side of the border, and the one scenario that justifies a crossing is an itinerary that already lives on the other bank.

Both docks offer free on-site parking, and neither charges for it, but neither guarantees a spot on the busiest peak-season days either, so arriving with buffer time matters more in July and August than in the shoulder months covered in our season guide. Whichever dock you're booked at, plan to arrive 45 minutes before your departure time for check-in, the participation agreement, and the mandatory safety orientation; late arrivals aren't held for, and the lot fills fastest in the half hour before a peak-season afternoon slot. On the Canadian side, the WeGo shuttle from the Floral Clock is a car-free option to reach Queenston, though it doesn't run the full season, so confirm it's operating before relying on it over a taxi or rideshare.

On the US side, there's no equivalent shuttle service, so a car, taxi or rideshare to the Lewiston waterfront is the practical option outside of walking distance from a Lewiston hotel.

In my seasons working Niagara tour boats, the question I heard most at the dock wasn't which side was better, it was whether people had picked the wrong one by accident. They hadn't, not really: the ride is the same from either bank. Book whichever dock sits closest to where you're actually staying and skip the border crossing unless something else on your itinerary already needs it.
