Why Book the Niagara Falls Wet Jet Boat?
The Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours open-top vessel is the most intense whitewater experience commercially available at Niagara Falls. While the Maid of the Mist cruises past the base of the falls from above, the Wet Jet heads downriver into the Niagara Gorge — a narrow limestone canyon carved over 12,000 years — and drives straight through Class 5 rapids at Devil's Hole.
Class 5 is the highest navigable whitewater rating. The boat is powered by triple turbo diesel water-jet engines and reaches speeds that send standing waves crashing over the open bow deck. Riders in the front rows are soaked within the first two minutes. The gorge walls on both sides are sheer and dramatic. There is no other way to experience this stretch of the Niagara River.
What You'll Experience on the Water
The 45-minute ride departs from the Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours dock in historic Lewiston, NY and heads upriver into the Niagara Gorge. Here's what you'll encounter:
- Class 5 Devil's Hole rapids — the most turbulent whitewater on the Niagara River
- The Niagara Whirlpool — a powerful natural eddy where the river swirls in a 180-degree turn
- Sheer limestone gorge walls rising 100–300 feet on both the New York and Ontario sides
- Full open-deck spray — front rows hit standing waves head-on and stay soaked the entire ride
- Live narration from the captain and crew throughout
- Views of the Niagara Gorge that no rim-top viewpoint can replicate
Wet Jet vs Dry Freedom Jet
This is the open-top wet boat. If you want the same 45-minute gorge route but prefer to stay dry, book the Domed Dry Freedom Jet instead — same price, same operator, enclosed dome keeps you completely dry.

Where to Board
Who This Tour Is (and Isn't) For
Perfect for:
- Thrill-seekers who want the most intense water experience at Niagara Falls
- Adults and teens on warm summer days who don't mind — or want — a full soaking
- Groups and families where everyone meets the height requirement (44 inches for front rows)
- Visitors combining the gorge experience with a falls viewpoint tour the same day
Not suitable for
This tour is not the right choice for:
- Anyone who doesn't want to get wet — book the Dry Freedom Jet instead
- Children under 44 inches tall — they cannot board
- Pregnant travelers or those with heart, back, or serious medical conditions
- Visitors who need wheelchair accessibility
- Cold or rainy days when getting soaked would be miserable — consider the domed dry option
Wet Jet Boat FAQ
How wet do you actually get on the open-top jet boat?
Completely soaked — especially in the front 4 rows. Within the first few minutes of hitting the rapids, every rider on the open deck is drenched head to toe. Rear rows get significantly less spray but still get very wet. Bring a complete change of clothes.
Can I stay dry on the jet boat?
Not on this tour. If you want the same gorge route but to stay dry, book the Domed Dry Freedom Jet — same price, same operator, enclosed dome keeps all riders completely dry.
Is there a minimum height requirement?
Yes — 44 inches (1.12 m) for the Wet Jet front seats. Children are measured on-site. Guests under 13 or under 100 lbs must sit in the rear rows of the boat.
What should I do with my phone and camera?
Put them in a waterproof case or dry bag and store in a locker before boarding. Loose electronics in the front rows regularly go overboard. The dock has an on-site photo service if you want pictures of your ride.
Does this tour go to Niagara Falls itself?
No — the jet boat route heads downriver into the Niagara Gorge, away from the falls. You'll see the gorge and the Niagara Whirlpool. To see Horseshoe Falls and American Falls, combine this with a Maid of the Mist tour or a sightseeing tour.
What Riders Say
There should be a bigger word than 'wet'! We have done jet boat tours before, but nothing as thrilling as this one. Captain Adam and Tori were fantastic — they made us feel safe, comfortable and confident. We literally considered going for a second ride. This was our family's favorite excursion.
You're gonna get wetter than wet but that's one of the best parts. Get ready to enjoy the rapids, the river, and the wild ride. Highly recommend this as a part of any visit to the Falls. 10/10!!!
The most incredible experience EVER! Captain Jason and Lexi did a great job — so much fun and so wet! I will repeat this tour over and over again, it's worth every dollar!
You get very wet — take a change of clothes and a towel. They supply lockers. You won't regret this! It's a blast.
